At the ETHOnline 2024 event, novice and seasoned developers will spend three weeks, from August 23 to September 13, collaborating to develop groundbreaking projects within the Ethereum ecosystem.
ETHOnline 2024 is organized by the nonprofit organization ETHGlobal. Founded in 2017 by Ethereum developer, investor, and Forbes “30 Under 30” awardee Kartik Talwar, ETHGlobal has already introduced 70,000 developers to Web3. The organization hosts at least one such event globally every month.
ETHOnline 2024 is touted as an “async hackathon,” meaning discussions on various topics occur whenever participants find it convenient. Essentially, developer interactions at the event will more closely resemble message exchanges on an online forum rather than a live Zoom call.
“Our events are open to both beginners and veterans of the web3 world. This event in particular will be tailored to attendees who have experience with Web2 technologies and are interested in building on web3 for the first time,” the ETHOnline 2024 organizers clarify.
Participants at the hackathon can work on any project, provided it is based on Ethereum. The organizers provide technical assistance, mentorship, and resources to help developers.
The prize pool for the event totals $225,000. Sponsors of the hackathon offer rewards for integrating their protocols and SDKs (software development kits, libraries, and developer documentation). Notable grants of $20,000 each will be provided by LayerZero, Avail, Mina Protocol, and Sign Protocol.

Participation in the hackathon is free, but organizers require participants to stake a small amount of cryptocurrency to demonstrate their commitment. After the project, even if unfinished, is submitted for judging, the staked funds will be fully refunded.
