We’ve seen AI write texts, create images, and even drive cars. But can it step into the shoes of a professional stylist? AI-driven clothing apps are said to revolutionize the fashion industry, but how accurately do they reflect our individual tastes and current trends?

DeepFashion is an application that, according to its creators, unites fashion with artificial intelligence. The neural network analyzes photos to identify the color, shape, texture, and other characteristics of clothing, then finds similar images online to create new outfit and accessory combinations.DeepFashion has a good grasp of the latest trends and can piece together a fashionable outfit. The standout feature, though, is the face-swapping option.
Users can "overlay" their face onto the selected look to better imagine how they would appear in the recommended clothing.The app offers support for five languages: English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese.
After signing up, you’re prompted to “Train Your AI Designer.” To do so, you upload 5-30 images of clothing that you like. The neural network analyzes and stores these images, using them as a reference when putting together outfits. The AI stylist's proficiency will largely be determined by the amount, quality, and variety of images provided during the initial setup.
DeepFashion: Uploading Pictures to Design New Outfits
Once you've uploaded the images, you can start generating ideas for your new look. The free version provides only one trial task with the AI designer.
We presented the AI with a simple question: “What should I wear today?” and supplied it with images from Pinterest. Our aim was to observe how it would combine two styles, focusing on matching colors and material textures.

The outcome was far from satisfactory. The ensemble featured a different color scheme, bizarre sleeves, uneven pant lengths, and inexplicably, three legs.
DeepFashion: Designing a One-of-a-Kind Look
Convinced that the first try was a bust, we repeated the experiment with a new account. When we made a targeted request for a "classic dress in emerald shades," the app gave us a blurry image. It was only through the description that we realized it was supposed to depict a woman in an "emerald green evening dress."
DeepFashion: Crafting a Classic Outfit
The developers position their program as a helpful tool for brand creators. The AI identifies key traits—such as cut, fabric, and print—from existing collections and generates new looks. It may be worthwhile for experienced designers to learn the app’s nuances, but for everyday use, it’s completely impractical.
Conclusion: The app didn’t meet the standards for a regular user, and the price certainly didn’t encourage further interaction with DeepFashion.

IDM VTON
This is a free desktop AI program with a virtual fitting room feature, allowing you to "dress" any clothing on a photo of a person to create a realistic visual. IDM VTON can adapt to any outfit and body shape.The mechanism involves first uploading a photo of the person and then a photo of the clothing into the program. The AI merges these two inputs into a unified image.
Keep in mind that you can only upload photos of clothing without models. IDM VTON hasn’t mastered the ability to undress one person and dress another in those clothes just yet.
The results can be interesting, and sometimes downright entertaining.
First example: switching a blush blouse for a black top.

The AI replaces the old clothing with the new one, and in doing so, adjusts the top’s length based on its own judgment. In the end, it became a mid-length blouse. However, we won’t be too picky about small details. The result is generally acceptable.
Transforming the Model in IDM VTON
It became clear that the neural network doesn’t work well with dark-colored clothing, but it does a better job with brighter outfits, where the fabric texture and style are more defined. This is clearly seen in the second example.

Despite the complicated pose of the model and an additional object in the hand, the AI performed admirably. It even included a necklace, extra folds in the clothing (let’s overlook the chest!), and shadows on the sleeves.
Conclusion: IDM VTON is a compelling app that could be beneficial when buying clothes online. Of course, it’s not a matter of “this will look exactly the same on me as in the photo,” but it can help you evaluate whether the style and color are a good fit for you.

Style DNA
An English-language app for both desktops and smartphones with an extensive set of tools. It allows you to scan your wardrobe and use AI to assemble new outfits from the clothes you already own. The platform also features built-in stores, an AI chatbot, and a section dedicated to style recommendations for developing your personal look.Upon registration, you’ll be asked to fill out a detailed questionnaire (height, weight, body type, clothing preferences, lifestyle, etc.).

Upon completing the questionnaire, PC users will need to proceed with payment for the platform’s services. The mobile version provides a free trial period.
An interesting aspect: the mobile version of the test differs from the desktop version—it adds the feature to “take a photo for better color analysis.” The program will then recommend cosmetics selected for you from the stores on the site.
When you photograph and upload your clothing (preferably against a white wall), the neural network analyzes how well they suit you. After that, it can put together outfits using your existing clothes and suggest which items work well together.

After this, the AI stylist is bound to suggest you visit the online store “just around the block” to get the missing scarf or handbag. Conclusion: A decent tool for crafting your personal style. You can mix up your wardrobe for different looks without spending much extra. The only real downside is the pushy marketing, though you can always get ideas from the platform and shop locally for similar items.
