📣 AI: North Korea's Latest Tool in Cyber Warfare
posted 19 Feb 2024
North Korean hackers are now leveraging artificial intelligence to orchestrate more complex cyberattacks targeting military, infrastructure, and financial entities, including crypto projects. This advancement has been acknowledged by AI developer OpenAI, Microsoft, and the South Korean government, which consistently monitors attempts to infiltrate its public sector employees.
These attacks primarily employ phishing and social engineering tactics, with artificial intelligence enabling the North Koreans to overcome challenges such as poor language proficiency or limited communication skills. This technology allows them to establish and maintain relationships with potential targets over several months before deploying a phishing link.
Generative AI helps with chatting, sending messages, creating images and new identities — all the things you need to build that close relationship with your target, explained Erin Plante, vice-president of investigations at Chainalysis.
In addition to these capabilities, hackers are using artificial intelligence to develop more potent viruses and ransomware. With Western applications out of their reach, they currently depend on Chinese software solutions while also exploring the domain themselves. Other nations like China, Iran, and russia have also begun to implement AI in their cyberattack strategies.
