✨ AMD’s New Chip Is Here: Will It Overtake NVIDIA’s Blackwell
posted 11 Oct 2024
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), one of the main competitors of NVIDIA, debuted its new AI chip, the Instinct MI325X. During the Advancing AI 2024 event, the company announced that the chip will be in production in the second half of 2025.
The Instinct MI325X will compete with NVIDIA’s Blackwell, which is currently in high demand from companies building AI data centers, including OpenAI and Microsoft. Powerful chips are essential for training AI models due to their ability to handle complex calculations.
NVIDIA currently leads the GPU market and has held this position for the past several years. Over the last year, NVIDIA hit a 75% gross profit margin.
AMD holds second place in terms of market share. Its new chip makes the competition between companies stronger.
The MI325X is the follow-up to the MI320X: the next two products will be called MI350 and MI400, and are planned to launch in 2025 and 2026.
AMD’s CEO, Lisa Su, stated that the company aims to become the “end-to-end AI leader” over the next decade, noting that demand for AI continues to grow beyond expectations.
While the buyers of the MI325X have not been publicly confirmed, AMD has previously mentioned that Meta and Microsoft purchase its AI GPUs, with OpenAI also utilizing them in certain applications.
