Fidelity, the issuer of one of the Bitcoin ETFs (FBTC), has officially confirmed a data breach that compromised the personal information of more than 77,000 clients. While the company has not disclosed many details about the incident, it assured clients that the hackers did not gain access to their accounts. The breach occurred between August 17 and August 19, 2024.
We are notifying individuals as appropriate and providing them credit monitoring resources. We recognize our customers may have questions about this event and we have resources in place to assist them,
said a Fidelity representative.
According to the company, their security experts were able to detect the breach and shut down the attackers' access by August 19. However, by that time, the data of a certain group of users had already been compromised. Fidelity has since hired an external firm to investigate the breach thoroughly.

To put the scope into perspective: Fidelity manages over 51 million clients worldwide, with assets totaling approximately $5.5 trillion. As part of their response, Fidelity is offering affected clients two years of free credit monitoring to help safeguard them from potential consequences.

It's also important to note that this is not the first breach Fidelity has faced in the past year. In March 2024, hackers exploited a vulnerability in the Infosys system, stealing data from over 30,000 clients, including bank accounts, credit card numbers, and security codes. In total, Fidelity has experienced four breaches in the last ten months.
