British Army Twitter and YouTube accounts were hacked for digital asset scams
On July 3, the UK Army faced an attack on the official Twitter and YouTube accounts. The attackers used them for crypto scams with two different projects.
Both profiles were attacked simultaneously. On the Twitter account, which has 362 thousand followers, the hackers changed the official name of the account to “BAPESCAN”, and in the description, they indicated “#1 metavesto clan on the ETH chain with multi-billion dollar experience. Powered by @chaintchlabs.”
Publications with announcements of a new NFT collection and advertising of a fake website for minting non-fungible tokens began to appear in the feed. There was also a phony counter showing a decrease in the number of available NFTs, and it was supposed to motivate users to take advantage of the offer faster.
The army’s YouTube channel has undergone equally serious changes. The scammers planned to make it identical to the account of the global investment company Ark Invest, whose CEO is Cathie Wood. They replaced the logo and launched a continuous stream of old videos, including those featuring Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey. It differed from the original by having an overlay advertising dubious schemes for using BTC, ETH, and an offer to “double your money”.
It’s still unknown who exactly attacked departmental channels.
After the hacker attack stopped, the following tweet appeared:
“Apologies for the temporary interruption to our feed. We will conduct a full investigation and learn from this incident. Thanks for following us and normal service will now resume.”

Defense Ministry officials commented:
The breach of the Army’s Twitter and YouTube accounts that occurred earlier today has been resolved and an investigation is underway. The Army takes information security extremely seriously and until their investigation is complete it would be inappropriate to comment further.
