British PM to Discuss AI with POTUS
The meeting between British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and U.S. President Joe Biden is anticipated to tackle more than just political matters — it is also set to delve into issues surrounding the AI regulation.
In response to a letter published by several leading figures from the AI industry where they warn about the dire repercussions and an “extinction risk” to humanity comparable to “pandemics and nuclear war” of the technology, British PM Rishi Sunak confirmed that he is willing to discuss the matter with American President Joe Biden during his visit to Washington, D.C. that started on June 7.
“People will be concerned by the reports that AI poses an existential risk like pandemics or nuclear wars; I want them to be reassured that the government is looking very carefully at this,” said Sunak.
Recently, the British leader also had a meeting with the chiefs of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic.
During the recent discussions on AI at the G7, Sunak said the U.K. “can play a leadership role because ultimately, we’re only going to grapple with this problem and solve it if we work together not just with the companies but with countries around the world.”
The U.K. government has taken an increasingly hardened position towards AI risks since the publication of its “pro-innovation” AI white paper in March.
