Buterin Turns Meme Coins Into $1.6 Million for Charity

posted  14 Oct 2024
Between October 4 and 13, Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, raised 1,100 ETH (roughly $2.78 million) by selling various meme coins that were gifted to him. Of that amount, 360 ETH ($884,000) has already gone to charity.

On October 13, Buterin performed another charitable act. According to Spot On Chain, he converted $1.6 million worth of meme coins from his wallet, pledging that the funds would be used for charitable purposes.

The sale consisted of $982.8k in Moo Deng (MOODENG), $231k in Monsterra (MSTR), and $183k in ETHEREUM IS GOOD (EBULL). He also sold tokens like Popcat, Fwog, and vitalek buteren.

Buterin took a moment to praise meme coin creators for sending him tokens but encouraged them to consider donating directly to charity in the future.

Back on August 16, Vitalik Buterin donated all of the dog-themed meme coins he’d been gifted over the last 12 months to charity. The money was funneled into the Effective Altruism Funds to support animal protection.

Buterin’s charitable streak is expected to continue: as of October 2024, his wallet still holds $2.4 million in MOODENG, $144k in Neiro, $117k in MSTR, and $80k in Degen.

The Ethereum co-founder has previously voiced his approval of meme coin projects that donate to charity. He also underscored the value of fostering communities and funding public projects through the sale of such tokens.
On the flip side, Buterin criticized celebrity-driven meme coins, stating they mainly enrich celebrities and early investors, without adding value to the community at large.
