ByteDance & Huawei Team Up on New AI Model – A Game Changer?

posted  30 Sept 2024
Chinese tech giant ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, plans to develop a new artificial intelligence model trained using chips from Huawei Technologies, particularly the Ascend 910B. This move appears to be in response to U.S. export restrictions on chip technology for Chinese ventures.

The new AI model is expected to be less powerful than their existing AI, Doubao. While ByteDance and Huawei have not released any official statements on this, Michael Hughes, a U.S. company representative, commented that no new model development is currently in progress.

ByteDance previously ordered over 100,000 Ascend 910B chips, though only about 30,000 have been delivered so far, with shipments still ongoing. The company is currently using these chips for less resource-intensive tasks, such as data forecasting with pre-trained models, to reserve more powerful computing resources for other purposes.

However, training new AI models requires massive computational capacity, and it remains uncertain whether Chinese chips can handle the task effectively, even for the development of a relatively basic model.
