Crypto Laundering Network Shut Down by FBI and Ukrainian Police
National Police in cooperation with the FBI shut down a network of services for exchanging cryptocurrencies obtained through crime.
The services allowed cybercriminals to legalize assets obtained as "ransoms" from encryption virus attacks. The network was dismantled during an international police operation.
The Cyber Police Department, together with the Main Investigation Department of the National Police, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, and in cooperation with the United States' FBI, carried out a multi-level international operation to eliminate nine virtual asset exchange services.
The websites offered users anonymous cryptocurrency exchange. Such services were provided to facilitate the legalization and laundering of money obtained illegally. Through these exchanges, criminals transferred assets obtained as a result of harmful software (encryption virus) attacks and online fraud. Advertising for exchange services was carried out on closed hacker forums.
As a result of the operation, law enforcement officers blocked the network infrastructure located on servers in the United States, European countries, and Ukraine. Domain names have been confiscated.
At the moment, police officers are identifying those involved in criminal activities.
