Damus, a decentralized social networking app powered by the Nostr protocol, recently announced that it could be delisted from the App Store within a two-week timeframe.

In correspondence shared by the project on Twitter, Apple notified Damus of the need to submit an update aligning with the App Store Review Guidelines within 14 days. Failure to comply would result in the removal of the app from sale, as per Apple’s message to Damus.

This decision by Apple stems from concerns regarding the potential facilitation of digital content sales by content creators through the app.

Damus integrated a Layer 2 Lightning Network widget, enabling users to make direct bitcoin payments and provide tips on the platform.

Apple specifically mentioned, “We noticed that your app allows users to send ‘tips’ associated with receiving content from digital content creators with a mechanism other than in-app purchase.” According to guideline 3.1.1, tips or donations associated with receiving digital content must utilize in-app purchase, even if they are optional.

To maintain its presence on the App Store, Damus core developer William Casarin acknowledged that the aforementioned features would likely need to be removed. However, if no action is taken, the app will be removed from the store in its current form.

Damus clarified that it does not engage in the sale of digital goods or provide features for such transactions. Instead, it simply includes a tip button to facilitate peer-to-peer transactions, similar to Venmo or CashApp.
