Elon Musk has founded an AI company called xAI
Several months ago, it became known that Elon Musk had plans to open a new company after the billionaire registered X.AI Corp. in Nevada.
The name itself indirectly hinted at the future activities of the company. In an interview in April, Musk confirmed his intention to establish a startup aimed at "creating AI that understands the true nature of the universe" and expressed his desire for this AI to "do more good than harm."
Little is currently known about the new company. The organization's website indicates that the xAI team is planning to host a voice chat on Twitter Spaces this Friday, where they will likely provide more detailed information about their activities and goals.
Musk's earlier statements hinted at his desire to create a counterbalance to companies like OpenAI and Google, who have made significant advancements in AI and machine learning. It was also previously revealed that Musk acquired thousands of specialized graphics accelerators to empower Twitter with artificial intelligence. Whether these two projects are related remains unknown.
The xAI team comprises veterans and alumni from DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, as well as AI experts from the University of Toronto. They have been involved in the development of AI models and methods that accelerate AI learning, including Adam, Batch Normalization, Layer Normalization, innovative methods and analyses such as Transformer-XL Autoformalization, Memorizing Transformer, Batch Size Scaling, and μTransfer. Additionally, they have contributed to the creation of cutting-edge AI models like AlphaStar, AlphaCode, Inception, Minerva, GPT-3.5, and GPT-4.
