The Role of Namechain in ENS's Future Development

ENS is evolving beyond its original purpose of converting cryptographic addresses into human-readable names. The protocol is now positioning itself as a fundamental infrastructure for decentralized identity and naming in Web3. This includes the permissionless creation of user profiles, decentralized web hosting, and integration with traditional DNS systems.

Migrating ENS to an L2 network aims to tackle several critical challenges:

  • Increased transaction throughput
  • Lower transaction costs
  • Expanded functionality

This shift is expected to establish a scalable platform for decentralized identity, opening up new possibilities for cross-network name resolution, decentralized hosting, and identity verification solutions. Developers are calling on the community to play an active role in the project’s development by submitting proposals and providing feedback on existing protocols.

Why Linea?

Linea was selected as the foundation for Namechain due to its distinctive architectural advantages:

  1. Type 2 zkEVM (Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine): Linea offers full compatibility with Ethereum at the code level, allowing seamless integration of existing smart contracts and tools without requiring modifications. This is crucial for minimizing development costs and ensuring smooth operations.
  2. High Performance: Linea’s efficient verification mechanism and optimized rollup parameters enable fast transaction confirmations, ensuring quick and reliable name resolution—an essential requirement for ENS functionality.
  3. Cross-Ecosystem Compatibility: Linea supports synchronization with multiple Ethereum clients, enhancing the security and fault tolerance of integrated applications. This multi-client approach, combined with rapid transaction speeds, makes Linea an excellent fit for ENS’s goals.

In August 2024, ENS Labs also partnered with Dentity, a company specializing in digital identification applications. This collaboration aimed to integrate verified data into the blockchain, allowing users to link their on-chain identifiers with real-world identities. The partnership has significantly reshaped the way digital identities are managed, especially in the context of Web3 development.
