AI is making waves but the EU is ready to navigate them.
The European regulatory machine is gearing up for action.

Vera Jourova, the European Commission’s vice president for values and transparency, revealed that the EU is planning to take further action against AI-powered initiatives, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The goal is to make them less opaque to the public.

According to Jourova, those companies that use generative AI tools that can create disinformation should put disclaimers on their images as part of the fight against “fake news.”

“Signatories who have services with a potential to disseminate AI generated disinformation should, in turn, put in place technology to recognize such content and clearly label this to users,” she noted.

She touched upon different companies like Google, Microsoft  and Meta Platforms that have adopted the EU’s 2022 Code of Practice on Disinformation first created in 2018. According to her, in July they will be asked to report on which measures they are taking to keep AI in check.

At the same time, Twitter, recently taken over by Linda Yaccarino, should gear up for extra scrutiny from the regulators as the company withdrew from the code of practice, saying the company should anticipate more scrutiny from regulators.

“By leaving the Code, Twitter has attracted a lot of attention, and its actions and compliance with EU law will be scrutinized vigorously and urgently,” she said.

While the EU prepares its Artificial Intelligence Act that will only take effect in the next couple of years, the Union calls on the companies to conceive  a voluntary code of conduct and stick to it.
