EU to Launch Digital Wallet with ZK-Proof Technology

The wallet is designed as a smartphone app that stores digital versions of important documents, such as identification numbers, medical cards, passports, and more.

The purpose of the eID system is to simplify digital access to essential government services throughout the EU, while ensuring that citizens maintain full control over their personal information. This initiative is anticipated to present an alternative to prominent commercial providers of online identification and authentication services, including Apple, Google, Facebook, and Amazon.

European legislators have set an ambitious target: 80% of the EU population should adopt this system by 2030. However, experts in digital transformation and data protection have voiced concerns regarding its implementation. To achieve its intended success, the digital wallet must be user-friendly and ensure privacy while complying with all data protection standards. Moreover, an alternative must be provided for those who choose not to use the wallet.

It appears that the European Parliament understands this, as they have incorporated ZK-Proof (zero-knowledge proofs) technology into their eID system proposal. This technology enables the verification of the accuracy of specific information without fully revealing it or providing access to it. For instance, one can share information about their age without showing their passport. This feature could potentially become an integral part of the EU's digital wallet.

It's important to note that this initiative is still in its early stages, and a comprehensive assessment of this technology will be conducted, including its compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation.
