FC Barcelona and Plastiks: Tackling Plastic Pollution with NFTs
Football Club Barcelona, a WhiteBit official partner, has launched an exclusive NFT collection named Unleash Your Passion. In cooperation with Plastiks they are striving to combat the global issue of plastic pollution.
This issue remains a primary concern for humanity: each year, tons of plastic are carelessly discarded into the environment, despite environmentalists' warnings. Regrettably, the football community is no exception: a single match can produce over 8000 kg of waste. Thus, many clubs and businesses endeavor to recycle used materials.
Through this new collection, the team anticipates reducing their plastic use by about 35,000 kg. While this might seem like a modest figure, Barcelona has committed to a long-term partnership with Plastiks, an eco-conscious company using blockchain technologies. Their intention is to address environmental issues continually. As per the agreement, they aim to recycle over a ton of waste in three years by releasing various themed NFTs and providing appealing bonuses, all in line with the club's strategic plan.

The collection features 3000 NFTs (150 designs, each with 20 copies) depicting various animals. Plastiks employs the carbon-negative blockchain Celo to create these non-fungible tokens. NFT owners are promised a range of benefits, designed in conjunction with the football club, to encourage fans to engage more actively in the campaign: social media shout-outs, exclusive content, unique events, and participation in a draw to win one of ten autographed football shirts from club stars (Jordi Alba, Busquets, Gavi, Ansu Fati, among others). Each purchase generates up to two lottery tickets, with the winners to be announced on June 22, 2023.

Officially, sales are being held on the Plastiks trading platform. At the time of writing this article, the majority of NFTs are still available, but some have already been sold out. Prices start at $20, with payments accepted in cryptocurrency or by credit card, transactions from which further contribute to plastic recycling thanks to other company partners. This is a potent reminder that while rewards may attract the majority of attention, the main goal of the initiative remains in focus.
The long-term partnership between the companies is also worth noting, hinting at potential plans for the legendary football club to extend its presence in the decentralized space.
