Hedera became the first founding member of the Linux Foundation's Decentralized Trust (LFDT), transferring control of its source code, including core services, algorithms, and tools, to the foundation. This collaboration will be part of a new project called Hiero.

This move allows developers worldwide to contribute to building features and applications for Hedera, such as wallets, decentralized exchanges, cross-chain solutions, and more. Charles Adkins, President of Hedera Hashgraph, who joined the LFDT Governing Board, praised the decision:
By contributing our codebase to LF Decentralized Trust, as project Hiero, we are reaffirming our commitment to open governance and collaboration. LF Decentralized Trust's mission to advance decentralized systems aligns perfectly with our own goals.
While the management of the source code was handed over to the Linux Foundation, operational control will remain with Hedera’s current development team. This approach ensures a balance between the security and integrity of the Hedera network and the ability to tap into the resources of the Linux Foundation community.
