📣 Journalists Wage On Against OpenAI

The Center for Investigative Reporting (CIR) has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for unauthorized use of the nonprofit organization's materials in training its large language models. The lawsuit highlights copyright infringements and the potential adverse effects on the publishing industry.
“It’s immensely dangerous. Our existence relies on users finding our work valuable and deciding to support it,”,- commented CIR CEO Monika Bauerlein.
According to the CIR, OpenAI's early models included numerous references to the journalists' website, which has been operational since 1993. However, the app failed to credit the authors or provide links to the original sources, even though OpenAI has expressed its willingness to collaborate on this issue.
Monica also expressed concern that the AI developer's actions are effectively undermining democracy by damaging independent journalism. Similar lawsuits have been filed by other figures in the publishing and creative industries, including The New York Times, and authors George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, and others.
Conversely, some media outlets have entered into long-term agreements with the company, receiving compensation in exchange for the rights to use their news content for training AI models. Notable examples include the American magazine Time, French newspaper Le Monde, and the British Financial Times.
