📣 Pavel Durov's First Statement After Arrest
posted 6 Sept 2024
Telegram founder Pavel Durov made his first public statement since being detained in France. He thanked users for their support and described the accusations as 'misguided,' noting that Telegram has an official representative in the EU and a hotline with French security services to combat terrorism.
If a country is unhappy with an internet service, the established practice is to start a legal action against the service itself. No innovator will ever build new tools if they know they can be personally held responsible for potential abuse of those tools,Durov said.
He stressed that Telegram actively collaborates with regulators and law enforcement agencies worldwide but will not compromise with authoritarian regimes or violate user privacy. In such instances, Telegram prefers to exit the country, as it did in Iran and russia, where authorities demanded access to private messages.
Durov also noted that Telegram is already making considerable efforts to remove illegal content and is not the unregulated platform that some global media claim. Additionally, he directed the moderation team to strengthen efforts to prevent misuse of the platform and promised tangible results in the near future.
