The executive committee of SAG-AFTRA, the united union of actors and musicians, has provisionally approved a new agreement with major recording companies, including Warner Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment. Among other things, this agreement addresses the regulation of artificial intelligence in the music industry.
This agreement ensures that our members are protected. SAG-AFTRA stands firm in the belief that while technology can enhance the creative process, the essence of music must always be rooted in genuine human expression and experience, said Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA's National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator.
Once ratified in the coming weeks, the recording companies will be required to secure consent from performers, explicitly detail how they plan to use their voices in potential projects and provide a stipulated minimum compensation. Additionally, musicians will have the future right to revoke this permission.
The agreement also stipulates increases in minimum wages and pension benefits. Its signing could mark the resolution of ongoing disputes between musicians and companies over the use of AI to replicate artists' voices.
