⚡ Sam Altman: GPT-5 Probably Won’t Debut in 2024
posted 1 Nov 2024
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, stated that the next major AI model from the company is unlikely to roll out in 2024. The delay reflects OpenAI’s commitment to focusing on current model development rather than rushing a new launch.
Addressing the delay with Sora, OpenAI’s CPO, Kevin Weil, clarified that the model needs further tuning to guarantee safety, privacy protection, and other priorities. He also noted the importance of scaling computational resources.
For DALL-E, Altman shared that while an update is in the works, there’s currently no fixed timeline for its release.
Another subject of discussion on Reddit centered on OpenAI’s recent controversies. Users were especially interested in the company’s shift to a commercial framework and the recent wave of top executives stepping down.
Responding to these concerns, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s VP of Engineering, acknowledged the sense of loss in seeing colleagues depart but emphasized that the team remains highly talented. He added that a number of exceptional new members have joined the project as well.
He shared this information during a Reddit AMA session held by the OpenAI team on October 31, 2024.
