📣 Senators Introduce AI Regulation Bill
posted 12 Jul 2024
A bipartisan group of senators has introduced a new bill known as COPIED, aimed at regulating artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on combating deepfakes and ensuring fair compensation and rights for content creators. Should this initiative pass, it would implement these standards at the federal level.
The COPIED Act will also put creators, including local journalists, artists and musicians, back in control of their content with a provenance and watermark process that I think is very much needed, said Senator Cantwell.
The bill mandates the use of watermarks on AI-generated materials, prohibits the use of creators' content (including that of journalists and artists) for training models without their explicit consent, affirms the right of creators to take legal action against AI companies, and bans the removal of data concerning the origin of the content.
This legislation has garnered support from various organizations, including SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), the Recording Academy, the National Newspaper Association, and many other U.S. institutions involved in content production.
