Slim Shady and Snoop Dogg Gave a Bored Ape Performance at VMA
The legendary rappers Eminem and Snoop Dogg gave a show to remember.
Inspired by the Otherside metaverse, a collaborative project between Yuga Labs’ BAYC and Animoca Brands, the performance featured the two rappers’ latest collaborative NFT-inspired single ‘From the D 2 the LBC’.
The two rappers were also nominated for the “Best Hip Hop” award, which their opponent Nicki Minaj won.
After the performance, Snoop Dogg re-tweeted many posts, with some of them writing “Just like that! History made @Eminem @SnoopDogg @BoredApeYC and KODAS just ripped the @vmas DOWN!”
This year the VMAs, the audience of which has decreased from 12.4 million in 2011 viewers to 900,000 in 2021, also added a ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ category. While its nominees featured Justin Bieber, Rift Tour (featuring Ariana Grande), and Twenty One Pilots, it was BLACKPINK The Virtual
The Otherside, a gamified, interoperable metaverse that blends mechanics from massively multiplayer online role-playing games and web3-enabled virtual worlds, opened the doors to Voyagers and selected third-party developers for the first time on Jul. 16.
Both Eminem and Snoop Dogg are fans of NFTs. The latter’s Twitter handle currently features the profile pic of a Bored Ape NFT also known as “EminApe” created by GeeGazza. The Ape, bought by Eminem on Dec. 31 for 123.45 ETH (around $450 thousand at the time), wears a khaki army cap and a golden chain. Snoop Dogg also owns an NFT that he bought on Dec. 22.
