The parliament of the canton of Bern has voted in favor of exploring the potential for Bitcoin mining in the region. The initiative, proposed by the bipartisan Bitcoin Parliamentary Group, was supported by 85 members of parliament, while 46 voted against it.
This decision is viewed as a win for advocates of digital innovation, despite opposition from the canton’s State Council, which had argued against the proposal.

Objectives and Scope of the Study
The report focuses on identifying potential sources of surplus energy, exploring partnerships with local mining companies, and assessing how Bitcoin mining could contribute to stabilizing the energy grid.
As part of the analysis, the group reviewed the experience of Texas, USA, where Bitcoin mining has become a key element of energy policy, promoting renewable energy development and creating jobs.
Even though the debate was heavily influenced by classic FUD arguments and missed the point, the proposal ultimately found a clear majority. […] This result is an expression of the fact that the narrative on Bitcoin is changingnoted сanton member of parliament Samuel Kullmann on X.
Skepticism from Authorities
Earlier, the Bern State Council recommended rejecting the initiative. Officials pointed out that the canton’s energy consumption is tied to global energy markets, as the region is a net electricity exporter.
The council also highlighted growing demands from other data centers, advancements in energy storage technologies, and the volatility of the cryptocurrency market as key concerns.

Switzerland as a Cryptocurrency Pioneer
Despite differences of opinion, Switzerland remains one of the most forward-thinking countries in the cryptocurrency sector. Zug, often referred to as Crypto Valley, hosts the Ethereum Foundation, while Lugano annually holds the Plan B forum.
The Bern Parliament’s decision indicates a shifting perspective on cryptocurrencies. If implemented, the initiative could represent a significant step in advancing the region’s energy and digital economies.
