The project will use generative AI to help paralyzed patients generate messages via signals from its BCI.

The Synchron system is connected to a small implant that captures signals from the brain's motor centers. These signals are then interpreted to move a cursor on a computer screen. The AI aids in choosing the appropriate words and phrases.

The technology is primarily designed for individuals with limited motor functions who cannot interact with devices using their hands, voice, or eye movements. The company released a video showing a patient with the implant using AI to communicate with a doctor.

Synchron's developers highlight the less invasive implantation method as a key advantage of their system. The device is inserted through an incision in the jugular vein on the neck, where it then travels to a vessel that interfaces with the brain's cortex. This method avoids the need for open brain surgery.

Synchron was established in 2012 with backing from Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos.
