In August 2024, the University of Wyoming will launch the UW Bitcoin Research Institute (BRI), headed by associate professor and Bitcoin advocate, Bradley Rettler.

The future director pointed out that the current state of Bitcoin research is “poor”. He highlighted a study by University of Hawaii Professor Camilo Mora, which predicted that Bitcoin emissions could lead to a two-degree increase in global warming by 2048. Rettler argues that the study failed to consider key aspects like the network's difficulty adjustment and block size cap, resulting in misleading conclusions.
These mistakes make their way into journalism, and policy. Bitcoin is multi-faceted in theory, and even more so in practice. Journalists can’t be experts, so they rely on academics. Too many of those academics have let them down,
Rettler wrote.
To address these issues, the BRI will produce academic materials to inform policymakers and the public about Bitcoin's operational principles and unique features. Additionally, the institute will host summer workshops and weekly seminars.

The BRI will operate as a nonprofit and accept BTC donations.
