The Norwegian Parliament did not support the ban on cryptocurrency mining
In Norway, left-wing parties tried to move a bill to ban energy-intensive mining.
In November last year, the Norwegian government began considering a proposal to ban mining at least partially. The regulatory authorities put forward the proposal due to miners, which increased electricity consumption.
In March 2022, the radical left Red Party (Rødt) presented a bill in the Norwegian Parliament that would ban energy-intensive cryptocurrency mining. In addition, Rødt presented solutions, according to which increased electricity tariffs would be introduced for those who mine.
Despite strong support for Rødt from the Norwegian Socialist Left Party and the Green Party of Norway, most MPs voted against the bill.
Rødt reacted negatively to their colleagues’ decision.
As for the opponents of the law, in their opinion, such initiatives, which discriminate against data centers on the basis of political views, are inappropriate and questionable.
Most colleagues disappointed us. After all, we are planning larger scale electrification of the country. If we do not want to destroy our nature, the government should prioritize what this electricity will be used for. Apparently, now most parliamentarians have the market as a priority and are ready to bill ordinary Norwegians for mining,said the representative of Rødt Sofie Marhaug.
