Twitter Threatens Legal Action Against Threads
Twitter has sent a legal notice to Meta, the parent company of Instagram, regarding its recently introduced text-based platform named Threads. Twitter’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, sent a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing the company of unlawfully poaching former Twitter employees to create a “copycat” application.
Spiro stated that Twitter considers Meta’s actions as a “systematic, willful, and unlawful misappropriation” of Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property. The letter demands that Meta immediately ceases using any Twitter trade secrets or highly confidential information.
Spiro alleged that Meta had hired numerous former Twitter employees who had access to Twitter’s trade secrets and confidential information. He further claimed that these employees were assigned to develop Meta’s Threads app with the intention of using Twitter’s trade secrets and intellectual property to expedite the development of Meta’s competing platform, which violates state and federal laws, as well as the employees’ ongoing obligations to Twitter.
Twitter emphasized its intent to enforce its intellectual property rights and stated that it reserves the right to seek civil remedies and injunctive relief to prevent further use or disclosure of its intellectual property by Meta.
