AI is generating heaps of controversy. The music industry is trying to come up with rules to regulate the situation.
Is it possible for AI songs to win a Grammy?

Yes, but only if they meet a set of criteria.

In an interview with AP, Recording Academy CEO and President Harvey Mason Jr. explained how the issuers of Grammys will be reviewing songs with AI-generated content in them after announcing that only ‘human creators’ are eligible to win.

However, with AI technology stepping on the toes of the music industry, Mason Jr. admits that the latest guideline set is flexible enough.

“I’ve met with the copyright office. We’ve talked about the future and what that looks like on a federal level and the legislative level,” Mason said, adding that “AI, or music that contains AI-created elements, is eligible for entry and for consideration for Grammy nomination. Period”.

As long as that AI song contains technology-generated content in small amounts, Mason clarifies, adding that if AI is the “lead vocalist”, then it cannot be nominated for the best performance award since it is not a real person singing.

“Conversely, if a song was sung by an actual human in the studio and they did all the performing but AI wrote the lyric or the track, the song would not be eligible in a composition or a songwriting category.”

Will the updated guidelines allow Paul McCartney, who created the “last Beatles record,” to use AI to extract the late John Lennon’s voice by telling AI to separate his voice from a guitar?

Mason said that it’s early days to tell; however, he did add that “from the early descriptions that I’ve heard, there would be components of the creation that would be absolutely eligible.”

Regardless of whether or not it is eligible for an award, we’re looking forward to listening to it.
