Blockchain: A Double-Edged Sword for Gaming?
Epic Games' CEO Tim Sweeney and executive Saxs Persson recently shared their thoughts on what's holding back the next generation of gaming, and it turns out that cryptocurrency is partly to blame.
Sweeney believes that blockchain technology has caused a "whole generation" of computer scientists to overlook the core technology needed to create truly revolutionary gaming experiences.
Persson chimed in, stating that the programming model for commercial game engines, including Epic's own Unreal Engine, needs to change to go beyond what battle royale games can currently offer.
Despite these challenges, Epic continues to push the boundaries of game development with its recent release of Unreal Engine 5.2 and new creation tools for Fortnite players. Sweeney and Persson believe that the Unreal Editor for Fortnite toolset is the next evolution of the modding scene, which has given birth to a host of new genres over the years.
While blockchain technology may be causing some disruption in the gaming industry, it's clear that Epic is determined to keep innovating and creating immersive gaming experiences. Maybe we'll even see some integration of crypto in their games down the line!
