DEF Challenges Alleged Patent Troll
The DeFi Education Fund (DEF) has lodged an appeal with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to invalidate a patent held by True Return Systems (TRS), which links external data to the blockchain.
DEF claims that TRS is acting as a "patent troll", targeting DeFi protocols that either can't or won't engage in legal battles.
Previously, True Return Systems attempted to auction their patent as an NFT but was unsuccessful. Consequently, they initiated legal actions against DeFi platforms, including MakerDAO and Compound Finance, in an attempt to establish the validity of their patent before pursuing other claims.
The USPTO is now obligated to take action and, as mandated by law, reach a decision within the next 6–12 months.
