Xbox, the world’s most powerful gaming console, is embracing Web3 technologies. To maintain its competitive edge and draw in new players, the company has added the first blockchain-based shooter developed by Gunzilla Games to its gaming store.
Xbox LIVE, a gaming division under the Microsoft Corporation umbrella, dominates the multiplayer gaming and digital distribution landscape. It prides itself on selling over 170 million gaming consoles, from the original Xbox released in 2001 to the latest Xbox Series X/S models hitting the market in 2020.
No other gaming console maker can claim nearly 100 million monthly gamers and a library exceeding a thousand titles. With the rising popularity of blockchain games, Microsoft decided to venture into this new territory with Xbox, aiming to assert its dominance.

The game is built on the Gunz platform based on the Avalanche blockchain. This is the first A-class platform that allows users to turn their items into NFTs, which can be traded both within the game and externally. The creators present it as a battle royale shooter similar to Fortnite, but in our view, it resembles a cyberpunk action game more.
Gamers can create their own NFT wallet (GUNZ Wallet) to store tokenized game assets — valuable loot and formidable weaponry — for collection or trading on the Gunz marketplace. The traditional in-game currency, dubbed RIP (a name that might not inspire, but fits the game's ample dark humor), is earned by progressing through levels and serves as the standard gaming "gold".
Moreover, Off The Grid introduces GUN tokens, the commerce currency of its marketplace, facilitating the purchase and sale of NFTs. Details on converting GUN into fiat or cryptocurrencies remain unclear, but expectations are set for its listing on DeFi platforms.
The narrative campaign is designed for a 60-hour playthrough, with royal battles accommodating up to 150 players at once.
Given its violent content and profanity, the game imposes an 18+ age restriction.
According to Xbox's official website, individual gameplay requires an Xbox One or Xbox Series X/S console. For large-scale battles, an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or Xbox Game Pass Core subscription is mandatory.
Game developers have indicated that Off The Grid will also be made available for PlayStation 5 soon.
